The Shire of Villaleon is the Southeastern Colorado chapter of the Society for Creative Anachronism (SCA), a non-profit educational organization devoted to the study of pre-seventeenth century Western culture. We concentrate on the Middle Ages and Renaissance periods of Europe; some members study the Middle East, Asia and other regions that had contact with Europe during this time. The members of the SCA take the best qualities of the time period and recreate them in the modern world.
The SCA is an international organization comprised of over 30,000 subscribing members. The world is divided into geographical regions called Kingdoms, ruled by Kings and Queens who are chosen through armored combat in Crown Tournaments. Villaleon is located in the Kingdom of the Outlands, which includes southeastern Wyoming, most of Colorado, all of New Mexico, the area of Scottsbluff, Nebraska and the area of El Paso, Texas.
Villaleon encompasses Huerfano, Las Animas, Bent, Baca, and Otero Counties on the southeastern plain; and Rio Grande, Alamosa, Costilla, and Conejos Counties in the San Luis Valley (zip code list here). Our core membership is centered on Walsenburg.
Our current banner artwork is a detail image of Die Heuernte (The Hay Harvest), an oil on wood painting created by Pieter Bruegel (c. 1525-1569), in 1565. This image is in the public domain and was cropped from the Wikimedia image of the complete painting.
